If livestock stray onto your property, attempt to locate the owner. If not successful, contact your local livestock inspector or the OII office at 250-314-9686 or by email. Supply the same information as required for missing livestock. A person is not allowed to "keep" livestock if you cannot locate the owner. After filing the report, arrangements will be made to have the animal removed from your property. You may be reimbursed for "reasonable" feed expenses starting on the day that you filed the report with OII and continuing until the animal is removed from your property. Other expenses that you may incur while the animal is in your possession are not reimbursable. An additional investigation will be done by OII to identify the owner. Also an advertisement will be placed in a newspaper that circulates in the area that the animal was found. If an individual comes forward with proof of ownership satisfactory to OII within 10 days of the advertisement in the paper, the animal(s) would be released to him/her once any expenses are paid by him/her. If not, the animal(s) would be sold by public auction with the proceeds applied against incurred expenses. The balance would be available for claim with proof of ownership for six months. |
